#5 Power (The Milgram Experiment)

The Milgram Experiment shows how a powerful and disturbing look into the power of authority and obedience. milgram developed an intimidating shock generator, with shock levels starting at 30 volts and increasing in all the way up to 450 volts. Each participant took the role of a "teacher" who would deliver a shock to the "student" every time an incorrect answer was produced.while the experiment progressed, the participant would hear the student plead to be released or even screaming. However, it was actually pretending to be shocked. Even though the student became completely silent and refuse to answer,65% of the participants delivered the maximum shocks. It is because the experimenter commanded to prod the participant by saying that "The experiment requires that you continue." or "you must go on."
The article "Five Faces of Oppression" explains that different types of oppression. There are exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. The article explains the definition of those terms and how it affects to the people who lives in society. From the textbook, chapter 5, I have learned what is empowerment. There are several strategies of empowerment: education, Organization. Networking. In addition, there are three power tactics that the specific strategies people use to influence others in everyday life: Hard and soft, Rational and nonrational, Unilateral and bilateral.
The power is affecting every level of society and influencing our daily lives. I believe that education is the most important way to increase empowerment and it makes you to be able to bring about an intended outcome, even when opposed by others.
